Benchmarking sustainability strategies: Why comparing climate strategies with other companies is important

As the world faces climate challenges, reducing CO2 emissions has become an important strategic goal for many companies. End customers and investors are also increasingly demanding climate-friendly behavior and decarbonization strategies in their decisions.
Companies around the world have recognized the urgency of the situation and are implementing decarbonization activities in their daily business. However, the approaches and options for climate-friendly action are diverse.

The shift towards a sustainable business strategy opens up a huge field full of tasks and a variety of approaches, all of which have an impact on business decisions. Companies must weigh up which changes and adjustments will have the greatest benefit for their ecological footprint at the lowest possible cost. Some companies set ambitious CO2 reduction targets, others invest in renewable energy sources, others use recycled materials and implement energy efficiency measures. Some pursue all approaches at once.

But what is the most effective method?
Schlegel und Partner has been supporting companies by analyzing climate strategies of peer players. Benchmarking the activities and strategies of competitors and neighboring companies in the value chain provides helpful insights and orientation for efficient strategy development.
Typically, there are industry-specific standards which companies must obtain but also actions only done by pioneers. A good example is the automotive industry. In recent benchmarking analyses, we have gained valuable insights into market-typical approaches. While the goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050 the latest is widely shared, there is significant variation in the intensity of efforts among companies. Sourcing green energy, closing material cycles and to raise up suppliers responsibility for CO2-reduction are just examples for potential strategies. Not only activities can vary, communication might differ considerably too. Industries outside automotive show similarly heterogeneous behavior.

Utilizing the knowledge about difficulties and coping strategies, we can offer our clients points of reference for the adaptation or development of an efficient and target-oriented climate strategy as well as valuable opportunities to make a positive distinction from the crowd.
